The Dercum Society & Research

At this time, the Dercum Society is not aware of any current clinical or medical research being undertaken that we feel we can support or recommend. We are aware of a few individuals who have taken it upon themselves to claim some sort of expertise in the field, but we are not satisfied at this time that those individuals are using industry-accepted safe, scientifically valid medical practices in their research or patient care. So at this time, we do not feel that we can safely recommend any particular researchers, doctors, and so-called experts. The only doctors at this time, whose prior research we are familiar enough with to support as having been undertaken under the proper medical industry & scientific guidelines, is that of Dr. Hakan Brorson & Dr. Birger Fagher. Their published peer-reviewed medical journal article, with a full summation of their multi-year study, may be downloaded here. Unfortunately, as far as we know, neither Dr. Brorson or Dr. Fagher are able to see patients clinically at this time, as their research has moved on into different fields of medicine.

We would like to note, however, that there are a multitude of published peer-reviewed medical journal articles regarding Dercum's Disease that are available through PubMed. Anything that has been published in a peer-reviewed medical journal can be relied upon to have been thoroughly examined by experts in the medical field, in order to ensure that the methods used in those studies were in keeping with accepted medical and scientific processes. Please be sure to take full advantage of the PubMed resource and learn as much as you can from the peer-reviewed literature that is currently available.
However, we would at this time like to urge everyone, doctor and patient alike, to be extremely cautious when dealing with so-called experts who are dealing in realms outside the scope of the peer-review process and current accepted medical practice. Your best protection against harm is to constantly seek second opinions, never relying fully on only one source. Basically, rely on your own peer-review process, constantly consulting as many sources as you possibly can, to ensure that you protect yourself, your health, your life, and your well-being. No one person can ever know all there is to know, so why would you ever rely completely on one person who claims otherwise?

If at any time such a specific medical research program is undertaken, for the express purpose of publication in a peer-reviewed medical journal, we will of course ammend this page. Until then, we appreciate your patience and understanding.
